Factors affecting your choice of project (all obvious but rarely stated):-

Interest - the most important factor, since you will spend a fair amount of time on it, you might as well do something you like, you'll be more motivated and do better. Moreover, your enthusiasm will show in the conduct and presentation of your project, which will affect the following issues more than anything else.

Grades - an impressive project investigation or implementation will get an impressive grade.

Jobs - something that might impress a potential employer in the area you hope to enter, or will impress people in any industry because of your insight and implementation.

So, for maximum merit, something should distinguish your project from the norm, in terms of concept, execution or application.
