Research
- I lead the Knowledge Engineering Group (KEG).
- We conduct research within the field of Artificial Intelligence.
- In particular, the Group is interested in knowledge-based systems for intelligent retrieval and decision-support.
- We are best known for our work in Case-Based Reasoning and Recommender Systems.
- We have applied our research to problems in domains such as
- filtering spam;
- predicting timber yield in forests;
- recommending configurable products; and
- managing the reuse of household and industrial waste.
- Separate pages give more details of our publications and research.
- I am also an associate member of 4C, the Cork Constraint Computation Centre.
Teaching
- On our B.Sc. in Computer
Science, I am currently teaching:
- CS1109 Programming and Web Development to first-year undergraduates; and
- CS2510 Web Servers to second-year undergraduates.
- I also run Induction Week(s) for first-year Computer Science undergraduates.
- I also supervise B.Sc. and M.Sc. projects. A separate page lists project suggestions.
- My past teaching includes modules in everything from databases to the theory of computation; from software design and development to discrete maths; from logic programming to internet computing; plus a lot of Artificial Intelligence of various kinds. A separate page gives more details of my past teaching.
Biographical sketch
- My qualifications include a B.Sc. from the Computer Science Department of Brunel University and a Ph.D. in computational linguistics from the University of Cambridge. In Cambridge, I was a member of Wolfson College, and I did my research within the Natural Language Processing Group of the Computer Laboratory.
- I moved to Cork to take up my Senior Lectureship in September 1997. Before that I spent eight years as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of York.
- Outside working hours, I can be found in pubs, in music venues, in book shops, walking up mountains, walking down mountains, in swimming pools, on aeroplanes to distant locations, and in transit between the above.
- My favourite fish is the haddock.
