AboutMe

Who Am I?

My name is Ahmed Zahran, a lecturer at the Computer Science Department , University College Cork (UCC) , Ireland. I am also a passionate experienced researcher, who loves developing new solutions and designs that improve the operation of computer and communication technologies and their applications in different economic sector.

I have obtained my Ph.D. at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Toronto in 2007 under the supervision of Prof. Ben Liang. I have also received my BSc and MSc in Electrical Engineering from Electronics and Electrical Communication Department at Faculty of Engineering, Cairo UniversityCairo University in 2000 and 2002 respectively. After finishing my PhD, I have worked in different institutions including Cairo University, Nile University, and University College Crok.

My research received several awards including the first DASH Industry forum award in MMSys 2017, The best DEMO award in IEEE LANMAN 2016, spotlight paper for IEEE Trans. Mobile Computing (June 2010), UCC commercialization award 2010, and the best paper award in IFIP Networking 2005 conference. I have served as a technical reviewer for various journals and conferences including, but not limited to, the IEEE Trans. on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Communication Mag., ICC, WCNC, VTC, Globecom, IFIP Networking. He served on the organizing committee and the technical program committee of several conferences.

What do I teach?

Taught Courses

I have taught various courses at Univ College Cork.

CS2507:Computer Architecture

This course covers various computer architecture topics such as instruction set design, processor design, and memory organizaition. This course expose the student how various design decisions impacts computer performance.

CS4627:Software-Defined Networking

This course focuses on the evolution of computer and communication networks towards software-based technologies, such as SDN and NFV. The student would also practice developing network applications in SDN settings.

CS5009/CS2214: Multimedia I

The course covers fundamental concepts for multimedia representation , compression, and delivery. Student are exposed to various design tradeoffs that impact multimedia system design. Students would also use various application used for editing and creating various multimedia content.

CS6410:Project Development Skills

This course exposes te students to various activities involved in research projects. Covered topics include preparing literature review, technical writing, research methids, and presentation.

My Research

My Research

My research interests lie in the broad areas of general distributed systems and wireless Internet technologies, including next-generation wireless networks and systems, smart cities, and multimedia communications. In these areas, my research focuses on developing new algorithms, protocols, and solutions to ensure the best user experience. This goal is attained by tackling key problems, such as mobility and resource management.

Keywords: 4G, 5G, Software-defined networking (SDN), Network function virtualization (NFV), Video on demand, live video, Quality of Experience (QoE), Virtual reality (AR), Augmented reality (VR), Mobile sensory data, Big data analysis, Performance modeling and optimization.
