Printing & Hardware FAQ
If a computer is not working, who do I contact?
Log an online call to CS Helpdesk by emailing help@cs.ucc.ie stating:
* your username and email (please ensure that your email address is correct),
* the pc number or lab number as applicable, and
* the problem including as much detail possible.
Never assume someone else has logged the call - we do not mind hearing more than once!
If a printer runs out of paper, who do I contact?
If a printer runs out of paper, please contact CS Helpdesk by emailing help@cs.ucc.ie. The subject line should contain "Printer paper".
Printers are regularly re-stocked with paper. During term time, re-stocking normally occurs between 9am and 10am on weekday mornings. If necessary, additional re-stocking will take place.
Should a printer run out of paper in the evening or at the weekend, it will be re-stocked at the start of the next working day. If you urgently need to print, please use another lab printer.
When a printer runs out of paper, more will be added AS SOON AS IS PRACTICAL. Re-stocking paper may not be immediate.
If a printer jam occurs, what should I do?
If a printer jams or runs out of paper, DO NOT attempt to open or interfere with the printer. Please contact CS Helpdesk by emailing help@cs.ucc.ie. The subject line should contain "Printer jam".
The main cause of printer jams is the use of unsuitable media, e.g., pages from refill pads and transparencies. To prevent the insertion of such materials, some printers have been fitted with locks.
If a printer queue appears to be stuck, what should I do?
If you think the print queue may be jammed, please contact CS Helpdesk by emailing help@cs.ucc.ie. The subject line should contain "Printer queue".
If I notice another problem with the printer, what do I do?
When paper is being re-stocked, each printer is tested to determine if it requires toner or is jammed.
If you notice a problem at other times, please contact CS Helpdesk by emailing help@cs.ucc.ie. The subject line should contain "Printer fault".
The problem will be resolved as soon as possible.
Is there anything I can do to prevent printer queue jams?
Yes, there is.
Please check how large your print job is. If it is more than a few pages, avoid printing when there is heavy demand for the printers.
Do not print more than is necessary. Bear in mind that YOU are PAYING for the printing! You are being charged for your print quota, so DO NOT WASTE it!
If your job does not print, check the queue, and clear the job if necessary. Do not retry a print job without checking the queue.
Each user can only clear their own jobs. If you leave a job stuck in the queue, it must remain there until an administrator clears it.
If you think the print queue may be jammed, please contact CS Helpdesk by emailing help@cs.ucc.ie. The subject line should contain "Printer queue".
By default, no printers have been set up on the Windows desktop. Students will need to utilise different default printers depending on which labs they are using.
To set up a default printer:
* Open a browser and go to http://csprint
* Click on the printer you want to install
* Click connect to install it
From the command line, type:
lpr -Pprinter-name document-name
There is no space between -P and printer Name. Printer names are displayed beside the printer in each lab, e.g., if you are in Level 3 the printer name is level3laser , in level2 it is level2laser, etc.
If you are printing a postscript file, you must add the -l parameter to the command, e.g.,:
lpr -l -Pprinter-name document_name
I cannot print from Windows XP to the lab printer....
By default, Windows XP sets a printer known as 'Microsoft office document image writer'. If you are having problems printing from Windows XP to the lab printer, please do the following:
- Open a browser as http://csprint
- Select level1laser from the printers on the left hand side of the page.
- Click 'connect' front left hand side,
- Select YES to the 'add printer connection' dialog box,
- Click on start menu / printers and faxes
- Right click 'level1laser on sun' and select 'set as default printer'
You will only need to do this once. If it does not resolve the issue, please
contact CS Helpdesk by emailing help@cs.ucc.ie.
