Computer Science Backup Policy

The Computer Science Department provides a number of computing systems for faculty, staff, and students. Major operating systems supported include Linux, Solaris, and Windows 2000. Because of the varying number of servers, applications and data in the Department, this document attempts to describe what is/not backed up and the regularity and form of each backup.

Student and Staff Data

All Students/Staff in the Computer Science Department receive accounts for both the PC's in our computer labs, and the various servers( application web mail etc) within the Department. All Users store their files in their home directories, which are served by our centralized file server, Csfiler and mounted on all associated servers as /users.
The Netapp server Csfiler is backed up using three separate mechanisms for contingency purposes:
1. The primary/quickest file recovery mechanism for home directories is an inbuilt Netapp feature called snapshot. This feature allows online backup and quick and efficient restore of home-directory files. 2. These Snapshots are also backed up/overwritten on a dedicated raid box on a nightly basis, to provide contingency in the even of a failure of the Netapp box. 3. Home-directories on Csfiler are also backed up on a weekly basis to tape for off-site storage/contingency. Any student/staff member wishing to restore any home-directory files should send an email to help@cs.ucc.ie , with Restore request in subject line, stating their username, file names and location/directory, and the date to restore from.
Students using the Lab PC's under Windows or Linux should access and store their user files on the centralized file server, csfiler. Under Linux, your home directory will appear as your username ( ie /users/ (ie 02 04 etc)/username )and be mounted automatically when you log in. Windows users will see their home directory mapped to the Z: drive in My Computer.
The most common mistake students using lab PC's make is to accidentally store files outside their home directory . This occurs most with 4th years using dedicated pc’s, saving work to dedicated machine instead of home-directory. For example, Windows users often drag files onto their desktops, rather than to the Z: drive. Files existing on the lab PC's are NOT backed up, nor are they protected from access by other users. Because of the student profile system in place most files will be automatically overwritten on next login, so it is a students responsibility to save all necessary work to his/her home-directory.

Database Backups

Mysql resides on ocean. Both data and applications are backed up using an online backup facility to csfiler on a nightly basis, with one archive backup to tape taken once a week.
Sybase resides on Pharos. Data is backed up using an online backup facility to csfiler on a nightly basis, with one archive backup to tape of both data and applications on a weekly basis.

Mail Backup

Student Mail on ocean is backed up/overwritten using an online backup facility on a nightly basis with one archive backup to tape taken once a week. Staff mail on Interzone/csmail is backed up /overwritten on a nightly basis with one archive backup to tape taken once a week.

Web Backup

Student Web pages are backed up/overwritten using an online backup facility on a nightly basis with one archive tape backup taken once a week. Staff Web pages are backed up/overwritten using an online backup facility on a nightly basis.
