Scheduling, knowledge graphs and simulation for computing across heterogeneous edge and cloud resources.

About me

Who am I?

I am a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, and Programme Director of the MSc in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. I am a researcher and research leader who enjoys developing new solutions and designs that improve the operation of computer and communication technologies and their applications across economic sectors.

I have secured major competitive research grants as Principal Investigator across European, national (Research Ireland, Enterprise Ireland) and direct industry (Meta, CommScope, Huawei) funding schemes, and have over 90 peer-reviewed publications, multiple US patents and commercialized telecommunications intellectual property.

My research has received several awards, including the best paper award at the Workshop on the Internet of Time-Critical Things 2022, the first DASH Industry Forum Excellence in DASH award at MMSys 2017, the best demo award at IEEE LANMAN 2016, a spotlight paper in IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (2010), the UCC research commercialisation award 2010 and the best paper award at IFIP Networking 2005. I have served as a technical reviewer for many journals and conferences and on the organizing and technical program committees of several conferences.

My research

Research, projects and people

My research interests lie in the broad areas of distributed systems and wireless Internet technologies, including next-generation wireless networks and systems, smart cities and multimedia communications. I develop new algorithms, protocols and solutions that ensure the best user experience, tackling key problems such as mobility and resource management. My current focus is AI for mobile networks, 4G/5G/6G, Wi-Fi 6/7/8, time-sensitive networking, the edge-cloud continuum and adaptive video/XR streaming.
